Buying A Split Air Conditioner

Posted by Owen in Monday, April 06th 2009

Due to the rise of global warming the use of ACs is steadily growing. ACs function pretty much the same as a refrigerator by controlling the temperature by dropping the humidity.Almost all ACs work basically the same way no matter the size. The most widely used and popular AC is the split system air conditioner. This kind of AC has the compressor installed in the home and the condenser is outside and the two are connected by refrigerant pipes. This type of air conditioner is considerably quieter than its competitor.

Facts about split ACs:

These air conditioners tonnage size determines it’s cooling capacity. Split ACs come in 5 sizes half ton, three quarter ton,1 ton,1 and a half ton and 2 ton. If you opt for the lower tonnage unit to reduce cost, then you need more power to run the unit which cost you more in the long run. The unit used to measure an ACs cooling capacity is called btu: British thermal unit. The power of the ac depends on it’s cooling capacity.

Some facts to be aware of with split air conditioners:

1.When choosing an ac size does matter. For every 500 sq ft a 1 ton unit is required, when trying to cool a large hallway divide it up into small rooms.
2.You might need to install a hole in the wall of a room to accomodate a split ac. in most cases the hole need not be bigger than 3 inches in diameter and the depth of the hole will vary with the unit.
3. Additional tubing may be required for the unit to function properly. The size you will need will depend upon the distance between the indoor and outdoor unit.
4. Installation costs. Installing a split ac is more costly than installing a window unit. This will require the help of a professional who is experienced in installing these units.

When purchasing a split air conditioner try to go with a well known brand unit. The cheaper units usually use more electricity, finding parts for the brand names is also easier. Buying the better known brand may cost you more upfront but will be more efficient in the long run.

Split-ductless systems have an exterior condenser and an indoor evaporator unit that houses the cooling coil, a fan, and controls, to which you can add indoor blowers.
